2026 Hong Kong Derby: Power Rankings, Barrier Draw Update
The Idol Horse Hong Kong racing experts re-rank the 14-horse field for the 2026 BMW Hong Kong Derby after Thursday’s barrier draw.
The 2026 BMW Hong Kong Derby has long been billed as a race where the barrier draw would matter, and Thursday proved exactly that. In a year without a clear standout, the draw reshaped the picture, clearly benefitting Invincible Ibis and leaving some of his biggest rivals with a much tougher task ahead of Sunday’s classic.
That was reflected in the views of the Idol Horse panel, with the draw and its tactical implications prompting some meaningful changes to an already tight ranking. A kind gate, the right running style and the chance to land in the right spot suddenly matter even more in a Derby this open, where small edges could make the difference.
We asked our experts for their final rankings ahead of this year’s BMW Hong Kong Derby. This is the consensus order.
1. Invincible Ibis —
Previous Ranking: 1
Barrier: 3
Trainer: Mark Newnham
Jockey: Hugh Bowman
Rating: 94
HK Record: 9: 4-3-1
Maintains top spot, not just for the reasons that had him there already – the smooth preparation, the progression through the distances and the teamwork between Mark Newnham and Hugh Bowman – but because he came up with barrier three while many of his key rivals drew awkwardly.
Add in the fact Newnham had a record five winners at Happy Valley on Wednesday night and the stable is absolutely flying. Everything about his build-up says he is the right horse at the right time.

2. Stormy Grove ↑
Previous Ranking: 3
Barrier: 7
Trainer: Frankie Lor
Jockey: Harry Bentley
Rating: 98
HK Record: 7: 2-1-1
A horse with a booming turn of foot who stamped himself as a genuine Derby player with that Classic Cup win last time. There are still some concerns about whether he will settle and stay under the pressure of a Derby, but there is no doubting the quality.
Barrier seven looks ideal. The draw hurt others more than it helped him, but in such an even year that was enough to nudge him up the rankings.
3. Patch Of Cosmo ↑
Previous Ranking: 5
Barrier: 6
Trainer: Manfred Man
Jockey: Dylan Browne McMonagle
Rating: 89
HK Record: 14: 5-0-1
Jumps from five to three and continues to shape as one of the most interesting runners in the race. Dylan Browne McMonagle keeps the ride after his fall at Happy Valley on Wednesday night, and Manfred Man has done a tremendous job to bring this horse back from injury and have him peaking for a Derby.
He is a high-quality horse with upside and now gets a draw that gives him every chance to figure prominently. He no longer looks like a forgotten horse.
4. Little Paradise —
Previous Ranking: 4
Barrier: 10
Trainer: Jimmy Ting
Jockey: Vincent Ho
Rating: 103
HK Record: 10: 6-1-1
Holds his place, but the draw has not made life easier. Jimmy Ting has done remedial work with a horse who looked brilliant in the Classic Mile before throwing it away in the Classic Cup by getting warm beforehand, sitting down in the stalls, missing the start and then overracing.
Now he has come up with barrier 10 and Vincent Ho probably has little option but to go back from there. That is not ideal for a horse whose tendency to overrace can already complicate his chances.

5. Numbers ↓
Previous Ranking: 2
Barrier: 13
Trainer: Frankie Lor
Jockey: Derek Leung
Rating: 100
HK Record: 4: 2-0-1
Takes the biggest hit from the barrier draw after the likely front-runner in the race came up with gate 13. Derek Leung has to go forward on him, but there will almost certainly be pressure underneath to make sure he does not get there cheaply.
It is going to take a high-class front-running ride to overcome the map. The key point in his favour remains that he is the one horse in the race proven to run the trip and further.
6. Top Dragon —
Previous Ranking: 6
Barrier: 1
Trainer: Chris So
Jockey: Andrea Atzeni
Rating: 87
HK Record: 13: 3-4-2
Connections have changed course and decided to press on to the Derby, and he goes there off an unconventional preparation. He has not followed the standard path, but he is tough, in form and has more substance than some might think.
Andrea Atzeni picks up the ride late. He might not be the sexy horse in the field, but he has earned his shot and brings a bit of grit and a hint of quality.
7. Dazzling Fit —
Previous Ranking: 7
Barrier: 14
Trainer: David Eustace
Jockey: Luke Ferraris
Rating: 80
HK Record: 11: 3-1-2
Maintains his ranking, but the draw is a major blow. He has come up with the outside gate and that leaves Luke Ferraris with a tricky call at one of the most difficult starting points in world racing.
Ferraris went back from a wide draw on My Wish last year and was beaten a short head, but it is hard to see the same approach working here. He likely has to try to find midfield, and that will not be easy from barrier 14.

8. Emblazon —
Previous Ranking: 8
Barrier: 8
Trainer: Cody Mo
Jockey: Jerry Chau
Rating: 88
HK Record: 8: 5-1-0
One of the true X-factors in the race as a horse stepping sharply up from 1400 metres. It would take a significant training performance to win a Derby off that profile, but he keeps making people look silly and there is no doubting his talent.
Barrier eight is not ideal for a horse who now probably needs to be ridden for luck in midfield. If he gets the trip, he gets the trip, but he is going to need some favours in running.
9. Pope Cody —
Previous Ranking: 9
Barrier: 9
Trainer: Me Tsui
Jockey: James Orman
Rating: 76
HK Record: 15: 1-1-1
He does not jump off the page on profile, but his Classic Cup run was good enough to keep him in the conversation. He closed off nicely there and he shapes as a horse who should appreciate getting out to the Derby trip.
He lacks the class and hype of some of the others, but he is honest and has earned his place. In an open year, that counts for something.
10. Regal Gem —
Previous Ranking: 10
Barrier: 4
Trainer: Frankie Lor
Jockey: Alexis Badel
Rating: 85
HK Record: 12: 3-2-1
Earned his place in the field by showing he is not just a sprinter, running on strongly from the rear into the placings over a mile in a Class 2. That at least gave some substance to his Derby case.
He comes in from outside the rankings and remains an outsider, but he did enough late to suggest this shot is not completely out of left field.
11. Sagacious Life —
Previous Ranking: 11
Barrier: 2
Trainer: Pierre Ng
Jockey: Karis Teetan
Rating: 97
HK Record: 5: 2-0-0
Back in the rankings after sneaking into the field, but his preparation has lost momentum. The roaring issue remains a concern, and while barrier two gives him options, connections have said they will go back.
Is he really as poor a hope as this ranking suggests? Maybe not. He was the early number one seed for a reason, but since then his form has tapered off and he does not look to be heading the right way.
12. Beauty Bolt —
Previous Ranking: 12
Barrier: 11
Trainer: Tony Cruz
Jockey: Brenton Avdulla
Rating: 88
HK Record: 9: 2-3-2
His chances took a hit when James McDonald opted to get off him and ride Seraph Gabriel instead. That only sharpened the existing knock on him, which is whether he truly sees out 2000m.
Before the Classic Cup he had done little wrong and looked tactically versatile. That seventh was the first time he had missed a placing, and there are still judges who think J-Mac got the call wrong.

13. Seraph Gabriel —
Previous Ranking: 13
Barrier: 12
Trainer: David Eustace
Jockey: Zac Purton
Rating: 79
HK Record: 3: 0-1-0
James McDonald puzzled many when siding with David Eustace’s second string rather than Beauty Bolt, but travel issues for the Kiwi have meant Hong Kong’s champion Zac Purton, without a ride a week ago, steps in for a late pick-up.
On raw talent and looks, there is a horse here who could measure up. But on his last-start effort, he simply does not look in the race. He is one of the hardest horses in the field to line up.
14. Juneau Pride —
Previous Ranking: 14
Barrier: 5
Trainer: John Size
Jockey: Keith Yeung
Rating: 81
HK Record: 15: 3-6-3
Has had plenty of chances to elevate himself through 15 Hong Kong runs and has only just scraped into the field off a mark of 81. He is consistent enough, but there is a sense others have shown more upside.
The smallest horse in the race, and probably one whose owners are simply delighted to be in the Derby parade ring. Respect the consistency, but he still looks up against it.
